About wasps in Essex homes
Wasps nest in lofts, eaves, air bricks, sheds and hedges, and a nest can hold thousands of wasps by late summer. Disturbing one yourself is risky. Our technicians treat nests safely with the right equipment.
Signs of wasps
- Lots of wasps flying in and out of one spot, such as an eave, air brick or roof tile
- A papery, grey nest in the loft, shed or garden
- Chewing or crackling sounds in walls or ceilings
- Wasps appearing indoors near light fittings or windows
How we treat wasps
- Locate the nest entrance, including hard-to-reach high spots
- Apply professional insecticide dust directly into the nest
- Wasp activity dies down within a few hours
- Advice on removing the nest safely once it's inactive, if needed

Wasp Control: 5 frequently asked questions
Do I need to be home?
Not always. If the nest is outside and easy to reach, we can often treat it while you're out.
Do you remove bees?
We don't kill honeybees. We'll put you in touch with a local beekeeper. Bumblebee nests are usually best left alone.
How quickly can you come out?
Same-day wasp visits are available during peak season, subject to availability.
Will the wasps die straight away?
Most activity stops within a few hours of treatment, although you may see a few wasps returning to the nest for a day or so.
Should I block up the nest entrance?
No. Blocking the entrance can force wasps to find another way out, sometimes into your home. Leave it open so they come into contact with the treatment.
Dangers of wasps: 5 reasons to get them treated
- Wasp stings are painful, and unlike bees, wasps can sting more than once.
- Stings can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
- By late summer a single nest can hold thousands of wasps.
- Disturbing a nest makes wasps aggressive, and they release a scent that calls others to attack.
- Nests near doors, windows and patios can make your garden unusable.
5 interesting facts about wasps
- Wasps build their nests from chewed wood pulp mixed with saliva, making a type of paper.
- A queen wasp starts each new nest on her own in spring.
- Only new queens survive the winter. Old nests are never reused.
- Wasps help gardeners by eating caterpillars and other garden pests.
- Wasps become more of a nuisance in late summer, when they switch to sugary foods.
